Motivation is an interesting thing...it drives our actions.
But what happens when you can’t find motivation? I find this very challenging—I have a goal, but I can’t find the winning combination of thoughts and feelings to drive my behavior toward my goal for more than a few hours or a few days. I get distracted; I get lazy; the goal seems too far away; and the path to the goal seems too hard. Can you relate?
Right now, I am talking about eating well and exercising regularly. I’m pretty sure this is a common area where motivation is hard to come by. Oh, to find the winning combination of thoughts and short-term goals that will be strong enough to help me overcome my tiredness at the end of the day when I want to skip the gym!
More often than not, the knowledge that I will feel better mentally and physically after exercising or making a wise food choice is not always strong enough to win the battle. I know how it works - exercise more (using this torture machine!), drink more water, and eat less unhealthy foods, and I will like the results.
Maybe I just need to be more patient and kind to myself. After all, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Small changes and slow progress can still get the job done. Dramatic changes and giving up when you cannot sustain, definitely do not. And that is where the patience and kindness towards yourself come in. It is always a good idea to give yourself some grace.
For now, you’ll find me on the torture machine with the motivation of a cup of Paradise as my reward for making it to the gym today!
